Online Casinos in The Netherlands
The Netherlands has a regulated gambling market, with several national operators providing gambling opportunities for the country’s players. The Dutch Gambling Authority is a lot less lenient when it comes to online casino gambling, though. Taking a look at the tricky Dutch online gambling laws, we will see just what Dutch players can get away with when it comes to online casino gaming in the Netherlands.
Online gambling laws in the Netherlands
The original College van Toezicht op Kansspelen lost control of its gambling authority in 2012, after running the show for 16 years. It was replaced by the Dutch Gambling Authority that year, and a new Remote Gambling Bill was passed in 2014, which would effectively regulate the online gambling industry in the Netherlands. Despite passing the lower house in 2016, it has yet to be ratified by the Senate.
To date, there is no such thing as a genuine Dutch online casino licensed out of the Netherlands. This leaves Dutch players with no option but to play at offshore casinos. However, the Dutch Gambling Authority has tried to cut down on the number of sites open to Dutch players, by implementing bans via a blacklist. From December 2016, the Dutch Gambling Authority have made it clear that anybody offering iGaming services (such as online casinos) to Dutch players can be fined up to €820,000.
Of course, this is of no concern to Dutch players, with the authorities only targeting operators, not players.
If the Remote Gambling Bill is passed by the Senate, then the likelihood is that the Netherlands will have a fully regulated online casino gambling market at some point later this year or beyond. The benefit of this is that it will mean that Dutch players will be able to play at national online casinos or any offshore sites which are licensed by the Dutch Gambling Authority. In the meantime, players are forced to play at offshore sites.
Banking options for Dutch players
Most of the major banking options which are ideal for players in the Netherlands are the same as those which are suitable for players in other European countries. VISA and MasterCard represent the two most common credit card options, and all Dutch online casinos (that means to say offshore casinos accepting players from the Netherlands) will accept these options for deposits and withdrawals.
Other major options include iDeal. iDeal is linked to all major banks in the Netherlands and works as an e-wallet in much the same as PayPal, Skrill or Neteller. The latter two are also accepted at most Dutch online casinos.
Players at casinos in the Netherlands should not have to worry about any fees for depositing or withdrawing money at online casinos, and any winnings made through casino gambling are not subject to income tax.
Dutch casino safety and security
Whilst it is not illegal for Dutch players to play at online casinos, it is frowned upon by the gambling authorities. They have no basis to punish Dutch players, though. Instead, they go after the operators offering their services to casino players in the Netherlands.
It is worth pointing out that players in the Netherlands are going to have to sign up and play at offshore casinos until the Dutch Gambling Authority regulates and issues licenses of its own, and as we’ve said, there is no clear idea of when that will be.
The danger with playing at offshore casinos is that you need to know that the online casino you are playing at is safe and secure. By and large, all online casinos which are licensed out of the United Kingdom, Gibraltar or Malta are considered safe and secure, due to the strict regulations applied to them. The same is true of Kahnawake and most Curacao licensed casinos. Things get a little sketchier when we look at Panama or Costa Rican licensed casinos.
Mobile casino gaming in the Netherlands
Dutch players will have to play at offshore casinos for the time being, and most of the major offshore casinos offer mobile casino gaming. This means that playing mobile casino games on the go in the Netherlands is not an issue at all. Provided you have a somewhat up to date smartphone or tablet, and it is powered by iOS or Android software, you should have no problem playing your favourite mobile casino games on the go in the Netherlands.
Dutch casino games
Once again, offshore casinos are players only option for the time being in the Netherlands. This means that you have virtually every major casino site open to you (provided it isn’t blacklisted by the Dutch Gambling Authority). This naturally means that almost every major software provider’s titles are open to Dutch players in some way, shape or form.
Dutch players tend to play table games and slots above other forms of gambling games, just like players in other European countries. Admittedly, sports betting and lottery games are also popular amongst Dutch players, which makes it understandable why many Dutch players favour offshore casinos which tend to carry all these games under one roof.
It is a safe bet to play at an offshore casino which readily advertises itself as a Dutch online casino. They offer Nederlands as a language, the euro currency option, and support in Dutch. They frequently carry plenty of games which have also been proven to be hits with players in the country.
Online casino bonuses for Dutch players
Almost all major casino bonuses and promotions can be claimed by players in the Netherlands. Of course, it helps to check the terms and conditions of any casino bonus, as some may exclude players in the Netherlands.
By and large, most major offshore casinos which are offering welcome bonuses, free spin deals, no deposit bonuses, loyalty bonuses, redeposit deals, and daily, weekly or monthly offers will make their promotions and bonuses open to players located in the Netherlands.
These bonuses and promotions are often available in euros, although understandably, some local prize draws (especially where gadgets and holidays are offered as prizes) may not be accessible to players in the Netherlands.
